*What is hero worship?*
A feeling of extreme admiration for someone, imagining that they have qualities or abilities that are better than anyone else’s.

Some people are more prone to hero worship than others. The devotion of a hero-worshipper is often comparable to the reverence shown by religious followers towards their chosen deity. When hero worship is taken to extreme levels, it can be classified as a mental health problem. With the advent of Social media, hero-worship has become rampant.

1. It can lead to addictive behaviours of following the leader online, spending excessive time and losing focus on one’s own life.
2. It can hurt our mental health too, by distracting us from our normal lives and losing originality
3. *_It can also harm the heroes_* . It puts pressure on them to be perfect all the times. Heroes need to live upto their subjects fantasies, which is almost impossible. They become prisoners of others expectations. The hero might even buy into what is said about them and lose their sense of self. An otherwise self-aware and grounded person might convince themselves of their hero status and behave in mean, entitled and unkind ways because they know they can get away with it.

The key to overcoming hero worship is to wake up and step outside our self-created bubble. We will get to see that there’s more to life than being immersed in the world of our idol. Following steps can help in this process:
– Have a clear vision for your life
– Address any pains and problems in your life. Because it might be the reason for getting into hero worship and escape from facing own problems
– Find meaning and purpose in your life and pursue it
– Develop your self esteem
– Discover and nurture your gifts and be of service
– Realise no one is perfect

Placing ourself on a pedestal means loving ourselves enough to put our needs, preferences and vision centre stage. Doing this does not make us selfish.
