“Let’s cultivate education, dig the mine of knowledge, and explore the realm of knowledge… by meditating on Lord Vishnu!
Formal education is the transfer of knowledge, while non-formal education is the production of knowledge. One is the import-export of knowledge, and the other is the cultivation of knowledge, the mining of knowledge.
The question arises: how can we make education a process of cultivating knowledge, exploring knowledge, and digging the mine of knowledge, rather than just importing, exporting, or transferring it?
The answer lies in the four objects held by Lord Vishnu:
- Conch Shell (Shankh): Symbolizes the declaration of intent, the first step towards achieving a goal.
- Discus (Chakra): Represents the planning and thinking process, using our intellect to achieve our goals.
- Mace (Gada): Symbolizes active action, physical effort, and implementation of plans.
- Lotus (Padma): Represents detachment and equanimity, the ultimate goal of knowledge – to remain unaffected by success or failure.
These four objects represent the four stages of non-formal education:
- Declaration of intent (Shankh)
- Planning and thinking (Chakra)
- Action and implementation (Gada)
- Detachment and evaluation (Padma)
By following these stages, we can cultivate education, produce knowledge, and dig the mine of knowledge. This is the approach of non-formal education.
